Summary

Description
English: This is a pencil illustration by Spencer Alexander McDaniel intended to represent the ancient Thracian goddess Kotys. Kotys was associated with sexuality, so the artist chose to depict her half-clothed, wearing only a foxskin skirt wrapped around her waist. Kotys was a Thracian goddess and the ancient Greeks stereotyped Thracians as having red hair, so the artist decided to depict her with red hair.

She is shown bedecked in ivy, holding a thyrsos in her left hand and a bunch of grapes in her right, because the ivy, grapes, and the thyrsos are all symbols that the ancient Greeks associated with revelry and ritual madness. The words in Greek by her head and by her thyrsos say "Mistress Kotys" and "the Thracian Goddess" respectively.

The designs along the left and right sides of the drawing are based on patterns from Thracian art. The designs along the top and bottom are based on designs from ancient Greek pottery. The circular image in the lower right-hand corner is based on a coin minted by the Odrysian king Kotys I, who was evidently named after the goddess. It shows a kylix, or drinking cup, and an ivy leaf with the first three letters of the name "Kotys" in Greek.
